Reference terrazzo-floor project at one of the key air hubs of the Volga region — Kurumoch International Airport named after S. P. Korolev in Samara. In the departures area for domestic and international flights, about 5,000 m² of seamless Linolit TERRAZZO flooring was installed, combining resistance to heavy passen…

Task — solution — result

How we transformed a problematic concrete floor into a floor system resistant to washing and chemical exposure.

01

Task

  • — Provide a durable floor in the departures area that can withstand high passenger traffic and constant movement of baggage trolleys and service equipment.
  • — Integrate the flooring into the architecture of the passenger terminal, supporting visual axes and spatial zoning.
  • — Ensure a safe, non-slip surface under regular wet cleaning and during the winter season.
  • — Minimize the number of joints and local repairs that could trap dirt and complicate cleaning.

02

Solution

  • — The main system chosen was mosaic terrazzo floors based on Linolit TERRAZZO applied over a prepared concrete substrate.
  • — The substrate was cleaned, levelled and prepared with strength and adhesion control; expansion joints were designed taking into account the terminal geometry and passenger flow directions.
  • — The terrazzo mix was applied as a continuous carpet with a specified aggregate and colour, with differentiation between functional zones (waiting areas, corridors, approaches to gates).
  • — After curing, the flooring was ground and polished, and a protective penetrating sealer was applied to simplify cleaning and improve resistance to household chemicals.
  • — In the most heavily trafficked corridors and near boarding gates, an increased anti-slip effect was provided (approx. R10–R11 through the choice of aggregate and final finish).

03

Result

  • — Passenger areas received a continuous, visually light floor without noticeable joints, resistant to intensive traffic and rolling baggage.
  • — The terrazzo floors withstand daily use and regular wet cleaning without local damage or loss of decorative appearance.
  • — Passenger comfort when moving around has improved and slip risks have decreased, which is crucial for airport safety requirements.
  • — The flooring supports the architectural image of the terminal and creates a unified visual background that can serve as a reference when designing other transport hubs.

Client testimonial

«The floors in the departures area remain presentable even under high passenger traffic and round-the-clock operation, and the cleaning services note that the flooring is easy to maintain» — generalized feedback from the airport operations service (demonstration quote).
