Reference project of partners: Linolit TERRAZZO terrazzo floors at the bus station in Yoshkar-Ola (2021, floor area about 650 m²). The flooring operates in an area of intense passenger traffic: waiting hall, ticket office area, passages to platforms. For iFloor this case is used as a demonstration of how decorative …

Task — solution — result

How we transformed a problematic concrete floor into a floor system resistant to washing and chemical exposure.

01

Task

  • — Provide a wear-resistant floor for areas with a constant flow of passengers and wheeled luggage.
  • — Combine operational reliability with a neat, unobtrusive design suitable for a public space.
  • — Ensure a slip-safe surface (approximate R11) taking into account moisture, dirt and de-icing agents in the autumn–winter period.
  • — Reduce the number of joints and dirt accumulation zones and simplify daily wet cleaning.
  • — Ensure the possibility of local repairs without completely stopping the station’s operation.

02

Solution

  • — Decorative mosaic flooring based on Linolit TERRAZZO on a prepared concrete substrate was used as the system.
  • — The substrate was pre-surveyed, levelled and defects repaired with strength and adhesion control.
  • — A single carpet of flooring in a neutral colour scheme was formed, not distracting passengers’ attention and visually expanding the hall space.
  • — The surface was made with an approximate anti-slip class R11 through selection of aggregate fraction and grinding mode.
  • — After strength gain, grinding, polishing and application of a protective coating were carried out to simplify routine cleaning and increase resistance to de-icing agents and household chemicals.
  • — The work technology was adapted to the operating facility: the flooring was installed in stages, with part of the halls and passenger routes kept in operation.

03

Result

  • — A flat seamless floor of about 650 m² was obtained, resistant to intensive pedestrian traffic and trolleys/suitcases.
  • — The level of substrate dusting decreased, daily cleaning became easier and the amount of visible contamination in joints and seams was reduced.
  • — Thanks to the anti-slip effect, passenger safety increased during periods of rain and snowfall.
  • — Visually the floor became part of the station’s architecture: the neutral terrazzo texture works as a background for navigation, furniture and passenger flows without overloading the space.

Client testimonial

“It is important for us that the floors withstand heavy passenger traffic and frequent wet cleaning while maintaining a neat appearance. At this facility we managed to combine operational requirements with a normal modern look” — a general demonstration quote based on the experience of transport hubs.
